(More customer reviews)This new drill from Hitachi falls under the category of "compact" - a recognition by the various tool manufacturers that many folks want a smaller, lighter package in a high-performance tool.This tool has less torque and slower speed than its full-sized bretheren.But of course, a 550 in lb drill costs more, weighs more, and is much harder to handle.

Wow!This drill feels like a 9.6V or maybe a 12V drill with ni-cads.But with 374 in lbs of torque, it performs at a level that I did not expect from such a small tool.I use it mostly for drilling holes and driving screws in hardwood.It performs those tasks effortlessly.The chuck is satisfactory.The grip is small enough for my daughter to use it.The battery life is impressive, and the recharge time is very fast as compared to ni-cads.This drill feels light and balanced, and is a pleasure to use.

Borrowing an expression I read in a tool review recently - "This feels like the future."It seems like cordless tools have undergone a revolution, and this new drill with its remarkably light batteries is at the forefront.

I rarely reach for my full-sized drill since this new Hitachi came along.I recommend this drill without reservation.

Hitachi's DS18DFL 18-volt lithium ion rill kit features a 1.5Ah lithium ion battery that can be charged and recharged up to 1,500 times. This battery makes the overall weight of the drill significantly lighter than other models (over 40 percent), and it's uniquely interchangeable with other Hitachi drills for even more flexibility and value.
The two-piece magnet motor delivers 374 in/lbs of torque to power through even the toughest jobs with ease. The DS18DFL comes with two 1.5Ah batteries that last approximately three times longer than NiMH or NiCd batteries, meaning you don't have to replace the batteries as often -- which will save you money. Hitachi's lithium ion batteries maintain a steady charge from the moment the trigger is pulled until it's time to recharge.For the full duration of the charge, you'll enjoy maximum performance.
The 2-speed transmission is controlled by a one-touch speed shift knob that lets you select between 0-400 or 0-1,200 RPMs. The DS18DFL is one of the most compact and lightweight cordless drills in its class, measuring just over 8-1/2 inches and weighing only 3.7 pounds.The new battery technology reduces the weight by approximately a pound, which lessens user fatigue and improves maneuverability in tight or overhead applications.
